Magnitude 3.2 earthquake strikes near Al Hoceima, Al-Hoceima, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Morocco
An earthquake of magnitude 3.2 occurred in the morning on Sunday, February 12th, 2023, at 7:59 am local time near Al Hoceima, Al-Hoceima, Tanger-Tetouan-Al Hoceima, Morocco, as reported by Spain’s Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.2 as well.
Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 3.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 3.2.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mnoud (pop. 500) located 19 km from the epicenter, Bni Bouayach (pop. 18,300) 24 km away, and Imzouren (pop. 40,000) 28 km away.
In Tirhanimîne (pop. 55,800, 38 km away), Targuist (pop. 11,600, 38 km away), and Al Hoceima (pop. 395,600, 39 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
