A 29-year-old American husband has died after being struck by lightning while standing on a Florida beach during his honeymoon with his wife.

The incident occurred last Friday on a beach in Volusia County, where the victim was in ankle-deep water. Local media reported that he was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries.

Officials described the event as unusual, noting that the thunderstorm was still miles away from the site, making the lightning strike an exceptional and rare occurrence. Eyewitnesses stated that the sky was clear at the time, with no signs of an approaching storm, which adds to the mystery of the incident.

Florida experiences one of the highest lightning strike rates in the United States, averaging approximately 1.2 million strikes annually, according to the state’s health department. This tragedy is among at least three lightning-related fatalities recorded this year in states including North Carolina, Mississippi, and Texas, as per data from the National Weather Service.

Liability safety officer Mike Chettwood expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing that the victim was a tourist in the area for his honeymoon. He also highlighted the importance of following safety precautions during unpredictable weather conditions.
