The President of the National Press Union, Abd el-Kebir Akhchichen; expressed deep concern over the persistent delay in issuing laws to reform the press system. He warned that this delay constitutes a “serious neglect” threatening the entire sector’s future. Akhchiche urgently called on the government to confront what he described as “dominating lobbies in the media scene,” accused of obstructing reforms with baseless arguments in an attempt to maintain the status quo.
This warning comes at a time when the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Communication, Mr. Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, advocates for the necessity of reforms. However, the reality indicates the presence of influential forces within the media landscape that are striving to prevent the passage of new laws aimed at regulating the journalism sector and creating a balance between authority and the media. These forces, which claim to be protecting the profession, have been accused of delaying reforms over the years, which Akhchiche considers “a betrayal of trust and a dangerous exploitation of time.”
Observers are questioning the extent to which the government and the union can uncover the roots of this lobby, which is working to cement its influence and hinder essential changes. Many agree that every week passes without the laws being issued deepens the crisis and opens the door to potential setbacks, amid a rising chorus of calls for genuine reform and transparency in decision-making.
In this deadlock, the glimmer of hope diminishes as the delay in these vital laws continues. The struggle is no longer just about issuing new legislation; it has become about restoring trust and advancing the journalism sector, which faces numerous challenges. This situation requires all relevant parties to prioritize the profession’s interests above all else, and to uncover the hidden hands that obstruct progress before it’s too late.
